A Mouse Model That Mimics AIDS-Related Cytomegalovirus Retinitis: Insights into Pathogenesis

چکیده

With the appearance of worldwide AIDS pandemic four decades ago came a number debilitating opportunistic infections in patients immunosuppressed by pathogenic human retrovirus HIV. Among these was severe sight-threatening retinal disease caused cytomegalovirus (HCMV) that remains today significant cause vision loss and blindness untreated without access or sufficient response to combination antiretroviral therapy. Early investigations AIDS-related HCMV retinitis quickly characterized its hallmark clinical features unique histopathologic presentation but did not begin identify precise virologic immunologic events allow onset development this during HIV-induced immunosuppression. Toward end, several mouse models experimental have been developed provide new insights into pathophysiology AIDS. Herein, we summary comparison with particular emphasis on one model our laboratory which mice murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (MAIDS) origin develops reproducible well following intraocular infection (MCMV). The MAIDS MCMV has advanced discovery many clinically relevant mechanisms virus-induced tissue destruction are discussed summarized review. These findings may extend pathogenesis other virus infections.

Cytomegalovirus retinitis in AIDS.

Cytomegalovirus retinitis is common in adults with AIDS but has been reported infrequently in children with perinatally acquired HIV infection. The cases are presented of two infants with vertically acquired HIV infection who developed disseminated cytomegalovirus infection and retinitis, and who posed difficult management issues.

Mortality in Patients With AIDS-Related Cytomegalovirus Retinitis in Myanmar

TO THE EDITOR—Retinitis is the most common clinical manifestation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–related cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease, but there is irrefutable clinical [1] and autopsy [2] evidence that AIDS-related CMV retinitis is only part of a systemic infection. By virtue of this association with systemic disease, CMV retinitis both predicts and contributes to mortality [3], and sy...

Advances in the management of AIDS-related cytomegalovirus retinitis.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, a common complication of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), is increasing in frequency as patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) live longer. In recent years, the lifetime risk for CMV disease in HIV-infected persons has increased from 24.9% to 44.9%. Cytomegalovirus retinitis is usually diagnosed clinically: Almost all patient...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) shares many properties with other members of the herpesvirus family it exhibits latency, reactivates under suitable conditions to cause human disease, and it is incurable. CMV is the primary opportunistic viral infection in the immunosuppressed person and gives rise to a wide spectrum of disease. CMV is a major cause ofmorbidity and mortality among patients with AIDS, and ...
